KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala have started investigations into circumstances under which two bodies were recovered from a septic tank in the home of Businessman Charles Tumwine located in Kabowa, Lubaga division.

The development comes just days after last week, police recovered the body of Patrick Turyasingura who had been reported missing last month January 25, 2022.
The recovery of Turyasingura’s body followed a report by one Norman Muhangi, the deceased’s brother who had on 26 January told police that his brother was mysteriously missing.

“The brother (Muhangi) reported to the police and wanted assistance in helping trace his whereabouts,” Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said in a press briefing.

Days later, Naomi Tumwine, the wife to Charles Tumwine reported to neighbours that she had recovered Turyasingura’s body from a septic in a home that she owned where both Muhangi and Turyasingura were staying.

After police was informed, the body was recovered from the septic tank and on being subjected to a postmortem examination, results indicated that the deceased (Turyasingura) had been strangled.

This prompted police to arrest Ms. Naomi Tumwine and Norman Muhangi (the brother to the deceased) to assist in investigations into the incident after suspecting foul play in Turyasingura’s death.

Addressing journalists last week, Owoyesigyire said; “The body was in a decomposing state but the postmortem indicated the deceased had been strangled and later dropped in the septic tank. For the benefit of our investigations we arrested Norman Muhangi, the brother to the deceased and Naomi Tumwine his landlady.”

He noted that this came after statements from both suspects were inconsistent and detectives decided to arrest them to aid investigations.

Police also started the hunt for one Geoffrey Oduku, a security guard at the premises who was said to have disappeared on the day Muhangi reported the disappearance of his brother to police.

Police Retrieve Second Body

On Thursday, February 03, 2022, police recovered a second body from the same septic tank at the home raising concerns over the mysterious death of the two persons.

According to Owoyesigyire, the body was found in a decomposing state and could not be readily identified.

“However, there has been an ongoing inquiry at Katwe Police station into the disappearance of a male adult, one Akandida Roland from the same home which occurred in December 2020, and the matter has been under investigation since,” he said.

Police said the second body has also been taken to the city mortuary in Mulago to carry out a postmortem examination but also a DNA test to help clearly identify the remains recovered.

Owoyesigyire noted that the two suspects (Naomi Tumwine & Norman Muhangi) earlier arrested are still in police custody whereas efforts are underway to arrest Charles Tumwine to answer how the two bodies were recovered.
