Sex during pregnancy: All you need to know!

It’s perfectly safe to have sex during pregnancy unless your doctor or midwife has told you not to. Having sex will not hurt your baby.

There is less talk by the community about the whole topic of sex during pregnancy, probably because of our cultures’ tendency to disassociate expectant mothers from sexuality. Like many parents to be, many women may have questions about the safety of sex during pregnancy and what’s normal for most couples. Ideally, in a normal pregnancy, sex is considered safe during all stages of pregnancy. Couples may need to also explore which sex positions are most comfortable for them.

During pregnancy, most women find that they lose their desire and motivation for sex especially in the first and last trimesters due to various reasons which include morning sickness, heartburn, hip pain, increase in size, constipation, etc. These big changes in the body are bound to change the sex life. However, other women are finally free from the worries of conception and contraception and even feel much sexier than ever. Thus, every woman is different, and also every pregnancy is different.

Some men find the changes in the womans’ body very attractive during pregnancy. Other spouses may be afraid of the myths or turned off by their spouses appearance.  All of these feelings are perfectly normal. There are some things couples can do to keep their relationship on-track. In most cases, it is very okay to engage in sexual activities during pregnancy. Even when most women may not be interested in sexual intercourse during pregnancy due to discomfort, cuddling and touching keeps them intimate with their partners.

Pregnancy can be a stressful time for both husband and wife. Most men worry about supporting the family and being a good father. Women wonder about motherhood and the health and safety of the baby as well.

The whole idea when it comes to sex is intimacy and enjoyment. Therefore, if husband and wife are physically or emotionally uncomfortable, finding ways to accommodate one another will only bring them closer.
