KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Government of Uganda is expected to spend Shs 2.5 billion on the burial arrangements of the fallen former speaker Rt. Hon. Jacob L’okori Oulanyah who died on Sunday March 20 in Seattle, US.
The committee in charge of the burial arrangements of the late speaker headed by the Minister for presidency Milly Babalanda last week submitted their budget which was approved by the Finance Ministry on Friday, March 26, 2022.
The Shs2.5bn cost means Oulanyah’s burial will cost is more than six times that of the shs 400m spent on the burial of the late Central Bank of Uganda Governor, Prof Emmanuel-Tumusiime Mutebile.
In an exclusive insight into the budget by DailyMonitor’s Tuesday, March 29, publication, the budget for the burial will cover expenses of mourners at both Muyenga and Omoro district based residences of the deceased.
Below is a breakdown of the Ugx 2.5 billion burial cost
1. A-Plus Funeral Services will take shs 226m for the funeral services
2. Security for the whole funeral program has been allocated shs 158.5m
3. The finance committee in charge of the burial is expected to spend shs 248.7m
4. Shs 1.1bn has been allocated for expenses on the burial day
5. Shs 124m is reserved for fuel to coordinate the burial operations
6. While Acholi MPs have been allocated shs 312.9m for the ‘unspecified’ operations
Oulanyah’s body is expected to jet into the country on Friday, April 1st, and shall be followed by a weeklong series of activities for his burial.
According to the Parliamentary Pensions Act, the day Oulanyah will be buried shall be declared as a public holiday. Currently, national flags continue to be flown at half-mast.
At Oulanyah’s burial, there shall be a seventeen gun salute.
Meanwhile in Omoro district, efforts are underway to complete the mega mansion which was being constructed by the former Speaker before his death.
The works are being undertaken by the UPDF’s Engineering Brigade, although it is unlikely that they will have completed the entire structure by the end of this week.
