Tororo District NRM Boss jailed 30 years over murder of party registrar

TORORO, UGANDA: The High Court in Tororo district has sentenced Mr. Ojore Richard, the district NRM party secretary-general to 50 years in jail over murder of Oketcho Sinambio, the then party registrar during elections.

Ojore who is also a former aspirant for Tororo North County was convicted with two others, Emojong Moses and Imai Geoffrey after being found guilty of three charges of murder, aggravated robbery, and attempted murder.

The High Court judge, Esta Nambayo presiding over the hearing on Tuesday in Tororo found that the accused participated in the murder of Oketcho Sinambio who was the party registrar for Mukuju subcounty during the NRM primaries in 2020.

Evidence tabled by the prosecution team led by the DPP Mr. Ojok Alex Michael states that during the NRM Parliamentary elections on the 4th September 2020 at Akoret B Polling Station, in Akoret Zone, in Tororo District, Oketcho Sinambio was checking on various polling agents deployed at the various polling stations and that on reaching Akorot B, he together with Emurukut Thomas Omusolo who was riding him on a bodaboda were attacked by the 3 accused persons on suspicion that Oketcho was biased and was rigging NRM Primaries for another candidate.

Oketcho was hit with a Masai club on the neck while the boda boda rider was severely beaten on various parts of his body and robbed of cash shs45,000 and a mobile phone. The latter eventually died as he was being rushed to hospital.

In addition to the 30-year jail term, Ojore Richard and Imai Geofrey were sentenced to 20 more years on the count of attempted murder.

Judge Nambayo said the two sentences will run concurrently. She, however, acquitted the trio of the charge of aggravated robbery after evidence by the state failed to pin them over the same.
