Six dead, three injured in another accident on Mbale-Tirinyi road

“The three vehicles all got involved in the accident before falling into River Namatala. Some of the dead persons were being swept by the high-speed water but locals managed to retrieve them,” Mr Kapiede said.

MBALE, UGANDA: Six people have been confirmed dead in an accident that happened on Mbale-Tirinyi Road this morning at 6:am at the Namatala bridge, Mailo five, Nasenyi Sub County.

The accident involved motor vehicles Reg no- UAT 995A (Raum) and UBH 437K (Toyota Hiace) and UBJ 676W (Toyota Hiace), and one boda boda Cycle.

The deceased are; Mulabi David, Namarome Fatima, Nambafu Kurusum, Kafero Isaka, and a yet to be unidentified male adult, while three sustained injuries, of whom only one was identified as Nandigobe Saida.

According to Mr. Benard Kapiede, an eyewitness at the scene, the accident happened when the Taxi that was heading to Kampala knocked a boda boda cyclist heading to Mbale before ramming into the Raum vehicle that was also headed to Mbale.

“The three vehicles all got involved in the accident before falling into River Namatala. Some of the dead persons were being swept by the high-speed water but locals managed to retrieve them,” Mr Kapiede said.
He also said that some bystanders had been seriously injured as these were caught up in the Wednesday morning accident. Wreckages of the motorcycles and bicycles were also found at the scene of accident.

North Bukedi Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Immaculate Alaso, confirmed the tragic incident noting that the spate of accidents along Mbale-Tirinyi highway, Tirinyi-Pallisa-Kumi and Pallisa –Kamonkoli is increasingly becoming worrying, as many lives are being lost.

“The police have attributed this fatal accident to reckless drivers and failure to observe traffic guidelines because this accident could have been avoided if the drivers had adhered to traffic guidelines,” she said.

The victims of the accident were by press time taken to Mbale referral Hospital for postmortem and medical review.
