City businessman dies during surgery, doctor arrested

It is alleged that Odoch approached Kwikiriza at the medical facility complaining of stomach pain, and the latter allegedly proposed an operation but unfortunately died during surgery.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala has confirmed the arrest of a doctor attached to a city medical centre after a patient died during surgery at the facility.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson confirmed that Dr. Gideon Kwikiriza, a medical surgeon at Pulse Medical Centre in Kololo was arrested over the death of 56-year-old Albert Odoch, a businessman from Nakawa division in Kampala.

According to Owoyesigyire, it is alleged that Odoch approached Kwikiriza at the medical facility complaining of stomach pain, and the latter allegedly proposed an operation but unfortunately died during surgery.

“Odoch had sought help at several hospitals but had not got better, which prompted him to seek help at Pulse Medical Centre in Kololo. Unfortunately, the businessman died during the operation,” Owoyesigyire said.

The police spokesperson clarified that Kwikiriza remained quiet about the businessman’s death yet procedurally, a doctor or medical facility is supposed to immediately report any death that happens at their facility after which a medical report is generated and a post-mortem examination is done.

“He remained quiet about the death and it is only after the businessman’s relative raised the matter that the Police got to know about it,” Owoyesigyire said. “We have started carrying out our investigations to find out what may have caused the death. We want to find out if there was any kind of negligence on the part of the doctor or the hospital,” he said. 

Owoyesigyire added that Kwikiriza, who also works at Mulago is now in custody to ain investigations on what might have led to death of the businessman.
