KAMPALA, UGANDA: Cranes head coach Micho Milutin Sredojević will have to either beat Tanzania in September or get fired after a dismal start in the ongoing African Cup of Nations Qualifiers campaign.

Micho who guided Uganda to their first Afcon finals in four decades in 2017 has seen his side garner only 1 point from the two opening games after a 2-0 defeat to Algeria and a shambolic display in the 1-1 draw with Niger on Wednesday at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

With only one goal scored courtesy of Milton Kariisa, the Cranes now sit bottom of Group F and will now have to collect maximum points in the remaining 4 matches if they are to qualify for the Afcon tournament edition in Ivory Coast in 2023.

With a back-to-back encounter with Tanzania waiting in September, followed by Algeria at home in Entebbe and a trip to Niger in March next year, Uganda must ensure at worst they secure the second place to qualify after missing out the last two editions of the tournament.

Micho issued Ultimatum

Immediately after the painful draw with Niger at Kitende, FUFA president Moses Magogo reportedly made it very clear to Micho in front of the Cranes players. “Beat Tanzania or you are gone,” before giving the players their own portion of lecture as well.

When asked about the task at hand, Micho said “We must qualify and September matches are crucial for Uganda Cranes and myself as the final bill accounting officer. We qualify everything okay. If not, then it is clear. Absolutely normal football situation and nature of the game.”
