Grief as P.7 candidate suffocates to death in pit latrine

According to Stephen Odur, the uncle to the boy, his nephew came back home at around 5 pm from school greeted him, and proceeded on his way but he was shocked to hear a loud alarm from his children that Ochieng had sunk in the pit latrine five minutes after their interaction.

TORORO, UGANDA: Police in Tororo is investigating the sudden death of a Primary Seven Candidate and at Industrial View Primary School who suffocated to death after he sunk in the family pit latrine.

The deceased has been identified as Emmanuel Ochieng 16, a resident of Bison B village, Tororo municipality.

According to Stephen Odur, the uncle to the boy, his nephew came back home at around 5 pm from school greeted him, and proceeded on his way but he was shocked to hear a loud alarm from his children that Ochieng had sunk in the pit latrine five minutes after their interaction.

East News Publication reports that it took over 2 hours to recover Ochieng from the pit latrine but at the time of his retrieval, he was unconscious and in a comma.

Martin Okello Katandi, a resident in the area says the incident has generated fear amongst residents arguing that most of them will be forced to stop their children from going to the pit latrines.

Eridad Ochola, a maths teacher at Industrial view primary school said Ocieng had left the school few minutes after he finished doing his last mock examination papers.

Ochola described Ochieng as one of the brightest candidates that they hoped could get for the school a first grade in the forthcoming primary leaving examination.

Western division chairperson, Jamal Al Manyadi called the incident unfortunate and pledged to have the division intensify operations on pit latrines.

The chairman also warned against using unqualified personnel from constructing both houses and pit latrines.
