15 killed in fresh Kasese landslides, scores injured

According to the Uganda Redcross Society spokesperson Ms. Irene Nakasiita, six other people have also been retrieved with injuries and these are admitted at St. Paul’s Hospital Kasese Municipality.

KASESE, UGANDA: 15 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after fresh landslides hit Kasese district on Tuesday night.

The mudslides caused by heavy downpour left hundreds of residents displaced in Rukooki Sub County, Busongora South constituency, Kasese district.

According to the Uganda Redcross Society spokesperson Ms. Irene Nakasiita, six other people have also been retrieved with injuries and these are admitted at St. Paul’s Hospital Kasese Municipality.

@UgandaRedCross response action teams together with local authorities & community responders continue to support search and rescue efforts. 18 were reported missing early morning. 6 injured, referred to St. Paul’s Hospital,” Ms. Nakasiita said in a tweet.

She adds that several other people are feared dead and trapped into the mudslides as the search and rescue operation by the Red Cross officials, residents and local authorities intensifies.

Mr. Zakayo Kule Makuta, a primary teacher, area councilor and a survivor of the incident said it all stated as a usual normal rain before he was alerted by alarms by the locals residents after part of his residential house was swept off.

The Kasese district chairperson, Mr. Eriphaz Muhindi who sympathized with the grieved families asks the families near Kasika valley to shift to their neighbors and relatives for safety as his office consults for possible government intervention.
