OYAM: Witch doctor on the run over death of suspected goat thief

Gerald Apunyu, a resident of Iwari village, Opelere parish died on Thursday afternoon after drinking unknown substances on the advice of a suspected witch doctor on ground that he is a thief.

OYAM, UGANDA: Police in Oyam District are hunting for a suspected witch-doctor and three others following the death of a suspected goat thief in Loro Sub County.

Gerald Apunyu, a resident of Iwari village, Opelere parish died on Thursday afternoon after drinking unknown substances on the advice of a suspected witch doctor on ground that he is a thief.

The suspects include Jimmy Ogweo, a perforating to be Piso of Opelere Kakoja Okwir, Zampeo Ongulu and a witch doctor unidentified by press time.

Upon drinking the substances, he reportedly got unconscious and began vomiting before he died.

Apunyu alongside other two including Pius Omara and Obua Modek had been accused of stealing a goat belonging to Jimmy Ogweo, and the deceased sought services of the witch doctor to avoid being arrested.

Reverent Isaac Okeng, a parish priest at Adigo CoU parish says most Christians have lost faith in God and turned to devil spirit.

‘’Most people here have one leg in the church, one leg in devil worship. Once reacting, they don’t consider the consequences. However, as a church we are trying to guide, counsel and fight devil worshiping.’’ Okeng said.

He called upon Christians to consult church leaders whenever they are going through temptation other than resorting to witchcraft.

Thomas Oyuru, a catechist at Odong St Anna Chapels also reiterates the same call saying forgiveness should be number one in the mind of Christians.

‘’Once you have taken the devil’s direction, you lose more. We are calling Christians to let their actions match their words and it is bad to ruin your faith in these worldly things,’’.

‘’Is better to surrender the worldly things for the sake of your faith,’’ Oyuru said.

The Loro sub county LC3 Chairperson, Nelson Okunu has condemned resorting to witchcraft since it is a waste of time and resources that at the end give no good return.

According to him, the suspects will have to cater for the burial expenses of the deceased which is an extra cost to suspects.

The Oyam District Police commander, Innocent Mubangizi, confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to ascertain what exactly caused the death of Apunyu, a police mounts a hunt for the suspects.
