Novelist Kakwenza quietly smuggles family out of Uganda

Sources close to the family intimated to this website that Kakwenza’s wife and children escaped through Kenya en route to Germany where he receive them on Thursday morning.

Self-exiled Ugandan novelist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija has reunited with his family in Germany after managing to smuggle them out of Uganda amid insecurity concerns.

Sources close to the family intimated to this website that Kakwenza’s wife and children escaped through Kenya en route to Germany where he receive them.

Kakwenza when contacted for a comment confirmed that it is true his family is now with him in Germany before adding that his young family was subjected to “State-inspired surveillance,” and that they were fleeing in fear, forcing him to evacuate them quietly.

“Very true. My wife was facing state-inspired surveillance. Had been attacked twice at home, dogs poisoned and CCTV cameras plucked off. So I had to evacuate them silently,” Kakwenza said.

Kakwenza added that although security forces tried to stop his family at the border where they were detained for three hours, they were later released and permitted to enter Kenya.

“They spent three hours at the border when calls were being made. Passports had been confiscated. Later were returned and cleared.”

The escape of the Kakwenza family doesn’t come as a surprise after Mr Kawenza himself mysterious escaped immediately after he got bail from Buganda Road Court.

Who is Kakwenza?

A Ugandan author who spent several times in jail after openly criticizing President Yoweri Museveni and comic authoring books that portray the image of the current NRM government.

Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, an internationally acclaimed writer, was released from jail after being charged with communications offences related to a series of tweets he posted about Museveni and his son, an army general in 2021

The pen award-winning activist is currently exiled in Germany where he fled shortly after being granted bail. He said that he escaped because of fear for his life.
