FIFA World Cup: Croatia edge Brazil on penalties to reach semi-finals

Brazil took the lead in extra time with a superb finish from Neymar scored to put the Shamba boys ahead but Croatia’s Bruno Petkovic equalised with just minutes left in the extra-time whistle.

Croatia became the first nation to qualify for the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022 after beating Brazil 4-2 on penalties in the quarter-final after a 1-1 full time after extra time at the Education City Stadium in Doha, Qatar on Friday evening.

Brazil took the lead in extra time with a superb finish from Neymar scored to put the Shamba boys ahead but Croatia’s Bruno Petkovic equalised with just minutes left in the extra-time whistle to send the match into penalty shootouts.

The intense penalty shoot-out started in favour of Croatia after Dominik Livakovic rose to the occasion to save Brazil’s first chance as Rodrygo took a poor penalty.

Marquinhos’s powerful shot and Brazil’s fourth shootout hit at the goalpost as Croatia defeated the world cup favourites 4-2in penalties.

They advance to the semi-finals, while Brazil will have to wait at least another four years before winning a record-extending sixth title.
