Nine dead, 12 injured in Masaka-Mbarara road accident

It is alleged that a Mercedes Benz Actros trailer had a rear tyre bust, lost control and crossed over to the lane of on-coming vehicles, and ramming into two other vehicles.

LWENGO, UGANDA: At least nine (9) people have died and twelve (12) others injured in a nasty road crash that happened on the Masaka – Mbarara highway on Wednesday evening.

The 7:30pm incident happened at Kaganda towards Kyojja swamp in Kinoni Lwengo District, according to traffic police and road safety spokesperson, ASP Faridah Nampiima.

“The territorial traffic police in Masaka has today 28th December 2022, at around 7.30PM, registered a fatal accident that claimed lives of nine people,” Ms Nampiima said in a police statement.

According to Ms Nampiima, it is alleged that a motor vehicle Reg No RAF 168S/RL 1426 Mercedes Benz Actros trailer from Masaka heading to Mbarara side had a rear tyre bust, lost control and crossed over to the lane of on-coming vehicles, and ramming into vehicles: Reg No UBJ 084N Toyota Hiace and UAP 126A.

Nampiima confirmed that nine people died on the spot while twelve injured victims were rushed to Masaka hospital for first aid, with of the casualties reported to be in critical condition.

She added that the Fire and Rescue services personnel arrived the at the scene immediate and retrieved the dead bodies which were later taken to Masaka hospital for further autopsy report.

The accident comes shortly after police earlier today detailed a report showing that 55 people died in various accidents recorded during Christmas, most of whom were pedestrians and travellers in personal vehicles.
