Makerere University graduate hangs self in church

A friend to the deceased speaking on condition of anonymity said that: “The deceased even failed to make it to her February 2023 graduation day due to mental disorders- and often sought exorcism.”

RWAMPARA, UGANDA: Flavia Nagasha, a Makerere University fresh graduate was Thursday found hanging dead in an incident of suspected suicide at a local church in Rwampara district, Western Uganda.

Flavia Nagasha is one of the students who recently finished her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration at the University and was meant to attend the 73rd graduation, but failed to make it due to an illness.  

A friend to the deceased speaking on condition of anonymity said that: “The deceased even failed to make it to her February 2023 graduation day due to mental disorders- and often sought exorcism.”

“After running mad, she hanged herself. But prior to the tragedy, she had on several times been a victim of what was believed to be demonic attacks,” she added.

“I have learnt with great sorrow about her death. She is said to have been sick for some time. My Heartfelt condolences go to the family, friends and all the Makerereans. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” said Lawrence Alionzi, the outgoing Makerere guild president in a condoling message.

Similar Incidents

In November 2012, Emmanuel Kagina, a second-year student at the then Faculty of Arts and attached to a university hall- jumped to his death from the top of Mary Stuart Hall. He had been updating his social media pages that he would commit suicide over “disturbing issues.”

Still in November 2012, Hassan Muganzi, a second-year student of Information Technology and a resident of Nkrumah Hall, came down from the fourth floor of Mary Stuart Hall and died.

In April 2011, a 23-year-year-old final year Social Sciences student, Francis Kigenyi, jumped from the 5th floor of Baskon Hostel and died instantly. The deceased left a note complaining that “he had trouble, but no one was willing to listen.”
