Old Boy singlehandedly fundsfencing of Pallisa school

An old boy has funded the full fencing of Opadoi Primary School in Pallisa, ending years of stalled efforts and boosting school security.

Workers begin fencing works at Opadoi Primary School funded by old boy Emurwon Albert in Pallisa District.

Pallisa, Uganda: The community of Opadoi Parish in Akisim Sub-county has praised former pupil Emurwon Albert for singlehandedly funding the fencing of Opadoi Primary School, a project that had stalled for years due to limited community contributions.

The school had only managed to fence about 150 metres out of the required 1,970 metres since the initiative began in 2021, leaving learners and property exposed.

Headteacher Mr Akode John Peter commended Emurwon for stepping in to fully finance the project, relieving parents who had struggled to sustain contributions.

“I have no befitting words to appreciate Mr Emurwon. He has lifted a heavy burden off parents who had failed to meet their obligations,” Akode said.

He revealed that parents had earlier agreed to contribute UGX 6,500 per pupil annually, but response remained extremely low despite a school population of over 1,300 learners.

School Management Committee Chairperson Mr Obela Charles described the gesture as a wake-up call to all former students to support their former school.

“This is an awakening moment for all sons and daughters of Opadoi. We must come together and support the school’s development plan,” he said.

He noted that despite having over 1,300 pupils, the school has only 12 teachers—of whom just nine are active—affecting academic performance.

Akisim District Councillor Hon John Julius Okaki hailed Emurwon’s commitment, noting that the project is expected to cost over UGX 150 million.

“Many people focus on themselves, but this is a person thinking about the entire community. He deserves appreciation and prayers,” Okaki said.

He challenged other well-wishers and alumni to support initiatives such as solar installation, teachers’ housing, and academic support programmes.

Speaking briefly, Emurwon said he prefers not to publicise his contributions, citing his Christian beliefs. “As a Christian, I believe what the right hand gives should not be known by the left. I am simply giving back to the community that raised me,” he said.

He urged the community to take ownership of the school and work collectively to address existing challenges, including staffing gaps and infrastructure needs.

Residents welcomed the development, noting that the school had long been vulnerable due to lack of fencing. “This school has been exposed for years. This project will greatly improve security,” said Alex Felix Majeme, a community member.

Contractor Mr James Omeke of Afrocrete Uganda Ltd confirmed that the company will construct a standard, durable fence using high-quality materials.

He added that the project will also create temporary employment opportunities for local youth.
