Police confirm arrest of Minister Nandutu over iron sheets scandal

Nandutu, like other two ministers charged is currently detained at Kira Division Police in Wakiso from where she is expected to appear in court on Wednesday morning

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police have confirmed the arrest of Karamoja Affairs State Minister Hon Agnes Nandutu in relation to investigations surrounding the alleged abuse of office and theft of the iron sheets meant for the vulnerable people Karamoja region.

Polly Namaye, the Deputy police Spokesperson in a statement on Tuesday afternoon confirmed the development and said Nandutu is currently detained at Kira Division Police in Wakiso, a custody where fellow ministers Amos Lugoloobi and Dr Mary Goretti Kitutu spent nights following their separate arrests.

“The Uganda Police Force has this morning obtained a statement from the Honorable Minister of State for Karamoja Hon. Agnes Nandutu in relation to the ongoing investigations about Abuse of office and Theft of Iron sheets meant for Karamoja,” said Namaye.

“The Hon. Minister of State handed herself over to the Police at CID Headquarters Kibuli, where she was assigned detectives to take her statement. She is currently being held at Kira Division Police station,” added the police statement.

DailyExpress earlier today reported that the Bududa Woman MP had handed herself over to the Criminal Investigations Directorate in Kibuli for questioning on the ongoing investigation after going into hiding since last Friday when she was expected to be arraigned before court.

The Bududa Woman MP becomes the third minister to be charged in the widening scandal. She follows ministers Amos Lugoloobi (Planning) and her boss Dr Mary Goretti Kitutu (Karamoja Affairs) who have since been charged before the Anti Corruption Court in Kololo over the mismanagement of the Karamoja relief items.

Namaye said the minister’s file has been submitted to the office of the DPP for further guidance and possible sanctioning.
