KISORO: Suspected lesbian arrested after viral kissing picture

Mutoni Uwase who has been working as a barmaid at one of the bars in Mulayini, Chuho Road, Northern Division, Kisoro municipality was arrested on Saturday evening according to police reports.

KISORO, UGANDA: Police in Kisoro district have arrested a Rwandan lady on allegations of promoting lesbianism after appearing in a picture kissing another girl on one of the streets in the municipality.

Mutoni Uwase who has been working as a barmaid at one of the bars in Mulayini, Chuho Road, Northern Division, Kisoro municipality was arrested on Saturday evening according to police reports.

Her arrest came after two pictures showing her kissing another girl in the middle of the road went viral on social media drawing mixed reactions from the public accusing the couple of promoting lesbianism in their municipality.

Kisoro Police Community Liaison Officer (CLO), Boaz Arinaitwe, confirmed that Mutoni had been arrested by Saturday evening and put under custody as a hunt for her alleged partner continues.

“Now that we have Mutoni in custody, we are looking for her friend as investigations take shape,” said Arinaitwe, adding that the girls will be charged with attempting to commit an unnatural offence contrary to Section 145 of the Penal Code Act.

Arinaitwe condemned the act and appealed to parents and the general community to “fight such acts by nurturing well-behaved children” and reporting to police similar acts of misconduct.

He also challenged local council leaders to take the lead in fighting such acts in their communities.

The development comes at a time when Uganda’s Parliament is facing global condemnation for passing the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023. The bill has yet to be signed into law.

According to the Penal Code Act, committing an unnatural offence is punishable by life imprisonment. On the other hand, attempting to commit an unnatural offence attracts a maximum punishment of 7 years.
