89% of female inmates battling domestic violence cases – Mutuuzo

According to a report read by the minister, most of such cases are a result of men wanting to deprive women of their empowerment achievements.

KABALE, UGANDA: The Minister of State for Gender and Culture Hon Peace Mutuuzo Akiiki has revealed that 89 per cent of female inmates in Uganda are battling domestic violence-related cases.

Ms Mutuuzo made the revelation today while officiating the belated celebrations of the International Women’s Day at Rubaya Primary School Pray ground in Kahungye Sub County of Kabale District.

The Minister revealed that the current increase in cases of domestic violence in the country is blamed on men who have continued to act primitively by resorting to beating their women over family disagreements.

She also revealed that the rate of Domestic violence in Kabale District now stands at 57 per cent which she attributed to the failure of men and women to fulfil their responsibilities.

Mutuuzo also cited the decay of civilization’s morals by people as another factor fueling the cases which according to a report are a result of men wanting to deprive women of their empowerment achievements.

The Kabale District Women’s Council Chairperson, Ms Norah Twenda speaking at the same function said that the rate of domestic violence in Kabale currently affects the development at the household level.

She, therefore, urged the government to find ways of minimizing the vice in the district.
