UNDP seeks partnership with BLB to eliminate slums and create smart cities in Uganda

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) together with the Buganda Land Board (BLB) have inked a partnership that will among others seek to eliminate slums and create smart cities in the country.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) together with the Buganda Land Board (BLB) are seeking a partnership that will among others seek to eliminate slums and create smart cities in the country.

This was revealed on Thursday, July 06, during the UNDP workshop organized under the theme “sense-making workshop on frontier challenges for smart cities” at Protea Hotel Entebbe at the invitation of the UNDP Country Representative Ms Elsie Attafuah.

The CEO of Buganda Land Board Omuk Simon Kabogoza told the workshop participants about the interventions BLB, under the guidance of Ssaabasajja Kabaka has undertaken to address the challenge of housing in the country.

According to Kabogoza, this has been achievable through facilitating the building of affordable houses in Ssentema, high-end houses in Kigo, securing tenancy for bibanja holders on Kabaka’s land, enabling people to get titles, collaborating with urban authorities to enforce physical planning etc.

At the same workshop, Hajjat Rehema Nanvuma(HPPS-BLB) also made a presentation on behalf of BLB highlighting the opportunities for partnerships with BLB for the elimination of slums to create smart cities.

She highlighted already existing partnerships with GIZ, KCCA and other urban authorities, the cultural influence of BLB, the Kabaka as the largest landlord with BLB as the only agency managing his vast estate.

The workshop was attended by the State Minister of Lands for Urban Development, Hon. Paris Namuganza, UNDP resident representative, and KCCA ED Mrs Doroth Kisaka, among others.
