MITYANA, UGANDA: Police in Mityana have rescued a one-and-a-half-year-old baby from a pit latrine at Shell Wabigalo village, Tamu division in the central Ugandan district.
According to Wamala Police region spokesperson Rachael Kawala said upon inspection, preliminary investigations indicate that on the fateful day, an unidentified man heard a baby crying down a pit latrine and immediately informed a security guard attached to Neptune Security Services to rescue the baby.
The guard identified as Augustine Wabkela, 22, upon inspection confirmed that a baby had been dropped into the pit latrine.
“He quickly mobilised the neighbours for assistance and informed our Police fire and rescue services,” Ms Rachael Kawala said in a Sunday police statement.
Ms Kawala added that the leadership of the Mityana district Police commander and the rescue services, officers arrived at the scene in time and successfully rescued the unidentified baby boy, who is currently receiving treatment at Mityana General Hospital.
She said a case of child desertion has been filed, and efforts are underway to locate the parents of the victim as the investigation progress.
