70 pupils survive death as school bus catches fire in Ngora

Ngora, (UG): The police in East Kyoga Region are investigating the cause of an inferno that razed down a school bus that was ferrying at least 70 pupils of Pallisa Girls Primary School in the wee hours of on Wednesday morning.

The passengers were travelling aboard Kakise Bus registration number UAS 437P when the rear tyre burst causing the fire at around 1 am at Atoot Swamp along Mukongoro Road in Ngora District.

According to Mr Oscar Gregg Ageca, the spokesperson of East Kyoga Regional Police, preliminary information indicates that the pupils who were with their 13 teachers were returning from a music festival held in the Serere District when the bus caught fire after the rear tyre burst.

Mr Ageca reported that at the time of the incident, the passengers were safely evacuated except their property which was all burnt down to ashes in the inferno.

“Yes…all the learners and their teachers were safely evacuated with the exception of their property which was burnt to ashes. The learners had carried their personal effects including clothes and uniforms, beddings, boxes, and musical instruments among other items,” said Ageca.

The regional police spokesperson added that a case file vide Reference No TAR 50/203 was opened up at the traffic department of Ngora Central Police Station as investigations into the matter commenced.

The Police were still recording statements by Wednesday afternoon when we filed this story, while the learners and their teachers are said to have spent the rest of the night at a nearby church after surviving the inferno.
