Man, 48, kills wife over denial of conjugal rights

Arua, (UG): The Territorial Police in West Nile Region and Ayivu East CPS in Arua City have arrested one Agunda James, a 48-year-old husband over the alleged murder of his wife he accused of denying him conjugal rights.

Agunda, a peasant from Obaru cell, Ombokolo Ward is alleged to have caused the death of his wife, Chandiru Judith, aged 23 in a tragic incident that occurred on Friday night on the 1st of March, 2024.

According to Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, preliminary investigations indicate the couple had been sharing their marital bed without engaging in sexual relations following allegations made by the victim against her husband regarding extramarital affairs.

However, on the fateful night, Agunda James initiated a quarrel with his wife, prompting her to leave the bed and sleep on another mattress.

Enraged, the husband followed her, grabbed her, and proceeded to physically assault her, targeting her ribs. Tragically,

‘During the night of 1.03.2024, the suspect picked a quarrel with a wife, and she left the bed for him and slept down on another mattress. The angered husband followed and grabbed her, then hit her around the ribs. The victim fell down on the floor and succumbed to the injuries. The suspect went and handed himself over to the police,” said Mr Enanga in a Monday police statement.

Police say the scene of crime was documentation by law enforcement officers and an examination of the victim’s body was conducted after which the body was released to the relatives for burial arrangements.

According to Mr Enanga, Police continue to register gruesome murders in domestic settings, of spouses, especially women/wives by their husbands, over denial of conjugal rights and other extra-marital concerns.

“We should be reminded that every spouse, partner or lover has a right to life, which has to be respected instead of taking the law in one’s hands,” he stated.
