Ubos sets date to release preliminary Census results

Ubos Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza who is also the Census Commissioner addressing the media on Tuesday, May 28, 2024

Kampala, (UG):- The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has set June 24 as the date on which it will disseminate the preliminary results of the just concluded 2024 National Housing and Population Census exercise.

Dr Chris Mukiza, the Ubos Executive Director and Census Commissioner while announcing the date on Tuesday, May 28, explained that the preliminary dissemination of Census results will be followed by the release of provisional results on 24th September 2024 and the final Census report will be published on December 24th 2024.

By the close of the Census exercise on 26th May, the Ubos Boss said 99% of Ugandans had been enumerated and thanked all Ugandans who responded, cooperated and supported the exercise. He praised the public for their cooperation and engagement in the census process which is a sign of confidence in the statistics body and its activities.

He however pointed out that some Ugandans were not enumerated because they locked their gates and the enumerators could not access their premises, while others were single household members who were always away at work in factories and mines and others simply refused to be enumerated.

UBOS extended its gratitude to various local government officials, district planners, IT officers, communication officers, and local council leaders for their effective leadership in spearheading census activities from the district to the village level. Special thanks were also directed to the enumerators and their supervisors for their dedication and hard work.

“We shall forever be grateful for your commitment and determination towards completing the assigned enumeration areas within the allocated time,” Mukiza stated.

Initial data indicates a significant increase in the number of households with smaller household sizes compared to the 2014 census. He said Ubos is now focused on data processing, editing, and analysis.

In line with international best practices, a Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) will be conducted in July 2024 to validate the coverage and quality of the data collected. This survey will be carried out by an independent team of experts who did not participate in the main census exercise.
