Kibuku, Uganda: The Workers’ Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Byakatonda Abdul, has launched a district-wide Green Towns Initiative in Kibuku, aimed at mitigating climate change and enhancing the urban landscape through tree planting.
Spearheaded under his organization, Environmental Conservation Initiative Limited (ECIL), Dr. Byakatonda flagged off the campaign by handing over 5,000 tree seedlings to the Town Clerk of Kibuku Town Council, Mr. Kasimu Nangeje, in a symbolic ceremony marking the start of urban greening across the district.
“This initiative aims to provide much-needed shade, act as windbreakers, and enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of our towns,” said Dr. Byakatonda. “I urge all town clerks in Bulangira, Kasasira, Tirinyi, Kadama, and other small urban centers to collect their seedlings free of charge and contribute to making our towns greener and more sustainable.”
Mr. Kasimu welcomed the project, applauding Dr. Byakatonda for his leadership on environmental sustainability. “We need to embrace the initiative to green towns as advocated by the Honourable,” he said, encouraging fellow town clerks to pick up seedlings from ECIL’s nursery at the dam site.
The Green Towns Initiative seeks to expand urban tree cover, create healthier living environments, and strengthen local climate resilience. It aligns with ECIL’s broader mission of promoting environmental conservation and community participation in climate action.
Dr. Byakatonda called on urban authorities across Uganda to emulate the program, emphasizing collective responsibility in addressing climate challenges.
“By adopting green town initiatives, we can collectively make a lasting difference,” he said. “I encourage everyone to support and actively participate in this crucial endeavor.”
