Mayuge, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Mayuge District have commenced investigations into the fatal road crash that claimed the life of Hajjat Nusura Nabukalu, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Budaka District, on Sunday evening.

The accident, according to police occurred at approximately 4:30 PM in Musita Village in Baitambogwe Sub County along the Jinja-Iganga Highway, in Mayuge District.

The fatal road crash involved the RDC’s vehicle, a Toyota Double Cabin registration number UG 4803C, white in colour which was moving towards Jinja before colliding head-on with an Isuzu registration number KDH 025V travelling in the opposite direction.

In a police statement released on Sunday evening, police said the accident resulted from the action taken by the RDC’s driver identified as Waiswa Khalid to overtake other vehicles before colliding with the oncoming Isuzu registration number KDH 025V which was being driven by a yet-to-be-identified person.

“It’s alleged that on 29/12/2024 at about 1630HRS at Musita, the driver of motor vehicle UG 4803C, one Waiswa Khalid, coming from the Iganga side heading towards Jinja direction, while overtaking, collided head-on with the oncoming motor vehicle KDH 025V Isuzu,” the report stated on Sunday evening.

The collision, police said, had devastating consequences with Hajjat Nusura Nabukalu, a passenger in the double-cabin vehicle, killed on the spot, while the driver, Waiswa Khalid, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to Nakavule Hospital.

“The passenger of UG 4803C [Nabukalu] died on the spot, and the driver was rushed to Nakavule Hospital,” police further said. However, close sources told DailyExpress the RDC’s driver had been further transferred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Upon getting reports about the accident, police led by the Officer in Charge (OC) of Traffic Magamaga police station ASP Naikula John visited and documented the scene of the crash before ferrying the body to Jinja Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, the vehicles involved were towed to Magamaga Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) in the policing region.

Hajjat Nusura Nabukalu, a resident of Bugembe in Jinja, was highly regarded for her commitment to public service and her death leaves the community in mourning, with many describing her as a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly for the people of Budaka District.

The deceased was reportedly returning from Nawansinge village, Bulamagi Sub County in Iganga district where she was the chief guest at a thanksgiving ceremony organized by Mr Wekiya Cyrus, a local journalist attached to a Jinja-based radio.

By press time, details surrounding the late Nabukalu’s burial were still scanty with some reports indicating she will be buried today, Monday, December 30, at the Jinja City Muslim cemetery where her husband the late Juma Jalal was laid to rest.

The body on Monday rested at her home in Wanyama Central, Wanyama Ward in Jinja City North Division and will during the day be taken for prayers and public funeral service at Bugembe Blue Primary School before burial and final send-off.
