By Owen Odong

Gulu, (UG):- In a bid to address the water crisis and combat gender-based violence in northern Uganda, Gulu District Speaker, Ms Phoebe Ayo has commissioned three new boreholes to improve public health and provide clean water to local communities.

The boreholes, located in Paicho Subcounty, Olwor Village, and Omel Subcounty, which were commissioned over the weekend in the presence of Bishop Hudson Suubi of Born Again Churches in Buganda and other local leaders are expected to reduce health risks associated with unsafe water sources and alleviate the burden of water collection..

Ayo’s latest initiative builds on her previous efforts. In 2023, she commissioned 13 boreholes across the district, demonstrating her continued commitment to addressing water scarcity.

Her focus remains on ensuring that residents, especially women, children, and the elderly, no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water. By providing closer access to clean water, Ayo aims to improve health outcomes and reduce the physical strain on vulnerable populations.

In a recent interview, Ayo emphasized her dual objectives of improving water access and reducing gender-based violence, as the responsibility of fetching water often falls disproportionately on women. She also highlighted the dangers posed by communities relying on contaminated streams shared with animals.

Bishop Hudson Suubi expressed his support for Ayo’s efforts and announced plans to dig an additional 20 boreholes in the district. He urged voters to continue backing Ayo, especially in her bid for parliamentary representation, citing her impactful leadership in delivering essential services to the district.

Local leaders echoed the need for improved healthcare services.

James Omara, the LC1 of Onyaya Rwot Village, called for more healthcare facilities, noting that the district currently relies on a single, distant health centre. He appealed to Ayo to continue advocating for better healthcare resources.

Residents like Grace Akumu of Onyaya Rwot Village shared their struggles with water access, recounting long treks to fetch water and previous unfulfilled appeals to district leaders. Akumu praised Ayo’s initiatives and urged the people of Gulu to support leaders who prioritize tangible improvements in their lives.

Beyond water access, Ayo’s initiatives have included the donation of over 5,000 mattresses to the elderly and disabled, as well as funding for the education of more than 400 students. Her efforts reflect a commitment to improving the lives of Gulu’s most vulnerable populations.

With sustained support, Ayo’s initiatives are expected to continue positively transforming Gulu, bringing clean water, healthcare, and educational opportunities to ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for the district.
