Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda Police Force has paid tribute to retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sam Omala, describing him as a diligent and decisive officer whose service left a lasting mark on the Force.
Omala passed away on Monday morning at Mulago National Referral Hospital, just weeks away from his 65th birthday. He was battling a cancer-related illness, according to his son Sam Omala Jr.
Speaking at the weekly press briefing from Police Headquarters in Naguru, Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma read the force’s statement on Omala’s passing, saying; “We just had the sad news of the untimely demise of retired Commissioner of Police Sam Omala, most of you knew him. He retired at the rank of Assistant Commissioner.”
Recalling his personal experience serving under Omala, Kituuma praised his former superior for his unwavering professionalism and dedication. “I worked with him when I was DPC Old Kampala and he was the Operations Commander at Kampala Metropolitan North,” ACP Kituuma shared.
“All those who served under him and with him found him to be an astute and decisive officer, very professional and dedicated.”
The police mouthpiece emphasized that Omala’s career was distinguished by a clean record, free from allegations of misconduct or professional impropriety.
“With the public service, when you serve and come out intact, without a charge, without an accusation of professional impropriety, it is worth standing straight and feeling proud about it. And so was Sam,” Kituuma stated.
“Sam served all his years and came out with a clean service record. I know his children will be proud of that,” he added.
Omala rose to national prominence for his strong-handed approach during the 2011 “Walk to Work” protests, where he commanded operations against opposition demonstrations led by Dr. Kizza Besigye. His no-nonsense style earned him both criticism and respect in equal measure.
