Mbale, Uganda: Mbale Secondary School has kicked off a UGX 4 billion fundraising campaign to establish a state-of-the-art Science and Technology Hub as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations set for June 14, 2025.

The campaign was officially unveiled during a high-level fundraising dinner hosted at Mbale Resort Hotel, led by the fundraising committee chairperson, Mr. Moses Buyera. The event marked a significant milestone in the school’s journey toward fostering innovation and STEM education in Eastern Uganda.

“As a school, we are extremely excited. This successful fundraising dinner marks our second major milestone after the launch. Beyond raising money, we were also able to build valuable networks to mobilize resources for the construction of the hub,” Buyera said.

He added that the Science and Technology Hub will cost approximately UGX 4 billion and praised the overwhelming support received at the event. “The journey has begun, and we are grateful to everyone who stood with us. Your presence has added a brick to this dream,” he said.

Buyera further announced that the next major event will be a Fundraising Dinner in Kampala on May 25, 2025, followed by a series of activities back in Mbale, including a Charity Run and Walk, Wanale Hill hike, blood donation drive, medical camp, a clean-up of Mbale City, and the launch of the school’s Diamond Jubilee magazine.

Retired Bishop Samwiri Wabulakha, who represented Budadiri West MP Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi as a guest of honor, hailed the hub initiative as a timely development for the region.

“The innovation project at Mbale SS is a wake-up call for us in the East. When leaders like President Trump shut down NGOs, it’s a reminder that Africa, especially Uganda, must rethink our future and rely on our own resources. For how long shall we depend on handouts?” Wabulakha posed.

He also used the platform to caution the public ahead of the 2026 general elections. “Stop asking politicians for sugar, soap, or UGX 1,000. When you accept those tokens, you sell your future. Once the deal is made, they disappear and you lose,” he warned.

Wabulakha delivered a UGX 2 million contribution from the Nandala-Flora Foundation on behalf of Hon. Mafabi, who was unable to attend due to a scheduled trip.

The proposed Science and Technology Hub is expected to significantly enhance research capacity, innovation, and digital literacy among students, positioning Mbale Secondary School as a regional leader in STEM education.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony and lay the foundation stone for the hub later this year.
