Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has strongly dismissed as untrue reports making rounds on social media that the Board’s Executive Director, Mr. Dan Odongo, has resigned.

In a statement released on Thursday, May 15, via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, UNEB described the reports as “misleading, unfounded and baseless,” warning that such misinformation was aimed at tarnishing board’s reputation.

“Please disregard misleading reports on social media indicating that Mr. Dan Odongo, the UNEB ED, has resigned from his duties. This is unfounded and baseless, and is intended [to] damage the image of UNEB,” the post read.

The viral claims began spreading on Wednesday evening through several unverified X accounts and WhatsApp groups, with some posts alleging that Mr. Odongo had tendered in his resignation over internal disagreements regarding the release of the 2024 UACE results.

Some users falsely claimed that there had been political interference in the board’s examination processes and that Mr. Odongo had chosen to step down “on principle.” These claims were not accompanied by any official documentation or credible attribution, prompting UNEB to issue the clarification.

Mr. Odongo, who has been at the helm of the national exams body since 2015, has overseen key reforms in Uganda’s assessment systems, including the digitalization of registration and results processing, and the enforcement of tougher examination malpractice penalties.

UNEB has since urged the public to verify all information through its official communication channels and cautioned against spreading unverified news.

This is not the first time Mr. Odongo has been targeted by resignation rumors. In 2022, similar allegations surfaced but were also promptly debunked by the board.
