Sironko, Uganda: The State Minister for Karamoja Affairs and Woman MP for Sironko District, Hon Florence Nambozo Wamala, has come under fire after a delegation of 14 leaders from Mutufu Town Council stormed the NRM Secretariat in Kampala, accusing her of electoral manipulation, voter bribery, and violation of party guidelines during the recent Women’s League internal elections.
The delegation, which left Sironko at 4:00 AM on May 19, presented a dossier of irregularities to Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, demanding accountability and disqualification of the minister from the ongoing electoral processes.
According to the petitioners, Hon. Nambozo allegedly tore up the official voter register on May 6, attempted to bribe her opponent with UGX 10 million to step down, paid UGX 500,000 per voter, and smuggled in non-residents to vote in Mutufu parish.
She is further accused of registering men and the elderly in a Women’s League vote, and staging an illegal election the following day.
The situation escalated when the minister, realizing she had lost in her home parish, allegedly nominated herself in a neighbouring parish in secret, preventing others from contesting.
At the sub-county level, Nambozo allegedly abandoned her initial race and controversially vied for General Secretary under the mainstream structure, defying NRM’s electoral framework.
The NRM Secretariat’s intervention on May 16 and 17, led by Communications Director Emmanuel Dombo, halted the process pending investigations.
In a dramatic moment at the Secretariat, Dr. Odoi placed Hon. Nambozo on speakerphone before the Mutufu delegation and questioned her on the allegations. She claimed ignorance of the rules, prompting a stern response from Dr. Odoi.
“Madam Minister, phones exist for a reason,” Odoi reportedly fired back. He reminded her that it was her responsibility to consult the party leadership if uncertain about procedures.
The EC Boss is said to have directed the Minister to issue a formal apology and declared that she would not be allowed to stand for the district chairperson position until her letter is reviewed and approved by the President’s office.
Leaders from Mutufu say they will not relent until the NRM guarantees electoral fairness and restores public trust.
