Kampala, Uganda: Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote locally made Ugandan products, including Uganda Waragi, through the country’s diplomatic missions abroad.
The partnership, aligned with the government’s Buy Uganda, Build Uganda (BUBU) agenda, will see UBL supply its signature brands for international events hosted by Ugandan missions, with the goal of strengthening economic diplomacy and boosting export trade.
Speaking during the signing, UBL Managing Director Andrew Kilonzo hailed the collaboration as a strategic step in promoting Ugandan products internationally. “This is a great opportunity for us as a brewery to exhibit our rich, authentic Ugandan brands on an international scale that also has the great benefit of bringing in monetary value for both Uganda Breweries and the Government of Uganda.”
“The partnership will also promote trade and industry and grow Uganda’s hospitality and tourism sector.”
Under the agreement, UBL will provide sampling products quarterly for use in stakeholder and diplomatic engagements. The brewery will also be permitted to showcase and brand its products at official events hosted both in Uganda and at foreign missions.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vincent Bagiire Waiswa, underscored the deal’s alignment with the ministry’s Economic and Commercial Diplomacy program, which seeks to find markets for Ugandan products and facilitate bilateral trade.
“This is a big step in ensuring that our Ugandan products are available to guests at our events, and hopefully it will stimulate the interest we require to engage further on export opportunities with these markets,” Bagiire said.
He added that the government’s export-led strategy, anchored in agro-industrialization, tourism, mineral development, and science and technology transfer, begins with partnerships like the one signed with UBL.
Under the MoU, the ministry has committed to offering product sampling opportunities to key stakeholders and potential trade partners, while providing information to investors on UBL’s export-ready products, including Uganda Waragi, produced under the parent company Diageo.
