Mpigi, Uganda: At least one person has been confirmed dead and six others injured following a fatal road crash that occurred on Sunday evening, May 25, 2025, at Lwafumu Forest along the Bunjako–Buwama road in Mpigi District.
The crash involved motor vehicle registration number UBM 672G, commonly known as a Drone, whose driver fled the scene and remains at large.
According to traffic police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, preliminary investigations point to speeding and dangerously unsafe passenger transport as the cause of the crash, which happened at around 5:45 PM.
“The vehicle reportedly lost control, hit a pavement & overturned—killing 1 passenger instantly & injuring 06 others,” SP Kananura stated in an update posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday.
Police further revealed that UBM 672G had earlier been flagged by traffic officers at Lungala in Mpigi, alongside three other vehicles, UBG 649K, UBM 631E, and UAR 351Z, which were intercepted for multiple traffic violations including breach of operator’s Licence, carrying passengers in unsafe positions, careless driving and obscured registration plates
While the drivers of the three other vehicles were arrested and detained at Mpigi Police Station, SP Kananura said the driver of UBM 672G defied police orders to stop and continued in violation of the law.
“We strongly urge all motorists to comply with the directives by police officers, especially when stopped or directed in any way,” he advised. “What may appear to be an inconvenience could in fact be a critical, life-saving intervention.”
The Traffic Police also issued a stern warning to all drivers and operators who continue to endanger passengers by transporting them in illegal and unsafe ways, especially during this high-mobility season.
“We are aware of the season, but public safety must not be compromised,” SP Kananura emphasized, calling on all road users to prioritize safety and value their lives and those of others.
Investigations into the whereabouts of the fleeing driver are ongoing as police intensify efforts to apprehend him and bring him to justice.
The Buwama road crash adds to the growing list of fatal road accidents that have rattled Uganda in recent months.
According to Uganda Police annual traffic reports, over 1,400 people were killed on the roads between January and April 2025, with reckless driving, speeding, and disregard for traffic laws remaining the top causes.
In March alone, an average of 10 people died daily due to road crashes, prompting increased concern and urgency among authorities.
In response, Uganda Police has intensified nationwide enforcement operations, targeting unlicensed vehicles, overloaded commuter taxis, and private vehicles operating illegally as public service vehicles.
Traffic officers have also been instructed to maintain permanent traffic checkpoints along key blackspots, especially on busy highways such as Masaka Road, Northern Bypass, and Gulu Highway.
