Namugongo, Uganda: Security has been heightened at both the Catholic and Anglican Shrines in Namugongo, along with key access routes such as Kireka Road, ahead of Uganda Martyrs Day slated for June 3, 2025.
When the DailyExpress visited both shrines on the morning of May 28, visible deployments of security personnel were observed managing crowds, directing traffic, and monitoring access points to ensure the safety of pilgrims and visitors.
The atmosphere remains calm as preparations intensify. Restaurants around Namugongo are already experiencing a boom in business as they serve thousands of early-arriving pilgrims.
Vendors have also set up organized stalls about five meters off the roadsides, unlike in previous years when roadside congestion was a challenge. Bars in the vicinity have also opened their doors, marking the beginning of a festive period.
Unlike previous editions, this year’s vendor management appears more structured, with designated zones allowing smooth pedestrian movement and better coordination between vendors and authorities.
Martyrs’ Day is a national public holiday commemorating the 45 Ugandan martyrs, 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican, who were executed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda.
The annual pilgrimage attracts millions of believers from across Uganda, neighboring countries, and the global Christian community.
Pilgrims from all regions of Uganda have started arriving, many on foot, and are camping at both shrines in anticipation of the main celebration.
This year’s celebrations, hosted by Lugazi Diocese, will run under the theme “Walking in the Footsteps of the Martyrs for a Faithful Journey.” Activities will include vibrant liturgical services, spiritual reflections, and cultural performances.
Lugazi Diocese Vicar General, Monsignor Richard Kayondo, told journalists at a recent press briefing that the theme is meant to inspire spiritual renewal, resilience, and hope in today’s faithful, especially in the face of modern-day challenges.
