Babalanda speaks out on Museveni directive on RDCs taking part in 2026 elections

The Minister for Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, has dismissed reports claiming President Museveni blocked RDCs from standing in 2026 elections.

Kampala, Uganda: The Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, has dismissed as false recent online claims that President Museveni blocked Resident District/City Commissioners (RDCs/RCCs) from expressing political ambitions ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a statement shared Wednesday via her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Hon Babalanda clarified that the President has not imposed any such restriction and emphasized that all RDCs and RCCs retain their constitutional right to seek elective office, provided they act within the bounds of the law.

“I wish to clarify that H.E. the President @KagutaMuseveni has not stopped any RDC/DRDC/RCC/DRCC or Assistant RDC/RCC from standing for any political office, as it is being circulated online,” Babalanda posted.

She added, “The President hasn’t held any meeting to stop anyone, or cause them to desist from contesting. It’s everybody’s constitutional right to contest for a position as long as they follow the law.”

The Minister further noted that the Presidency only issued legal compliance guidance to RDCs interested in contesting and urged the public to disregard the rumors.

“It is, therefore, my hope that those interested have accordingly complied. Please disregard the rumors circulating!” she stated.

The clarification follows growing online speculation suggesting that the President had barred serving RDCs and their deputies from pursuing political office, claims that had triggered uncertainty among local leaders eyeing parliamentary or local government seats in 2026.
