Kiryandongo, Uganda: Uganda records over 380,000 new HIV/AIDS infections every year, with an alarming 104 cases daily among teenagers aged 14, according to the latest national estimates.

Addressing residents at a public sensitization event in Mutunda Sub-county, Kiryandongo District Woman MP aspirant, Ms Atuhura Joseline, expressed deep concern over the escalating infection rates, particularly among youth in the district.

“Kiryandongo alone registers over 11,000 new infections annually,” Atuhura stated. “This is not just a health crisis, but a social one compounded by rising cases of defilement, rape, and gender-based defamation.”

Atuhura pledged to confront the crisis head-on, promising to sponsor vulnerable and willing children in schools and vocational institutions as a proactive approach to curb exposure to risky behaviors.

“Keeping children meaningfully engaged in education and skill-building is one way to fight the virus and other forms of exploitation,” she told DailyExpress.

She applauded the district leadership for organizing the awareness event and vowed to continue supporting women’s empowerment initiatives. “This gathering reminds us that women play a vital role in shaping our communities, and I am committed to being part of that change,” Atuhura said.

The meeting, chaired by Kiryandongo District Chairperson Aliguma Edith Adyeri, emphasized the need for leaders to promote gender equality in public responsibility.

“We must embrace a society where both men and women share equal roles,” said Aliguma. “Our current leadership, from the Vice President, the Speaker of Parliament, to the Prime Minister, proves that women can lead at the highest levels.”

She, however, decried persistent traditional practices that undermine girls’ education. “Many parents here still prioritize customs over girls’ futures. This has to stop,” she warned.

Resident District Commissioner Dan Muganga used the same platform to announce that Mutunda Sub-county will soon benefit from a government seed secondary school.

“We are set to build a fully-equipped school with seven classrooms, girls’ dormitories, a science laboratory, an incinerator, and more,” Muganga confirmed, urging the sub-county leadership to expedite land titling to facilitate the project rollout.
