Kampala, Uganda: The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is today conducting primary elections for Special Interest Group (SIG) Committee flag bearers at the village level across the country.
The internal poll targets three special voter categories, Youth, Older Persons, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), who are electing their representatives to serve on NRM committees in their respective villages.
According to the party’s electoral roadmap, eligible voters began gathering at polling centres from 10:00 AM, with actual voting taking place between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM under the supervision of NRM village registrars.
“The exercise targets three categories of voters, Youth, Older Persons, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), who will elect representatives to serve on various NRM committees in their respective villages,” the party said in a brief to the media.
Eligibility guidelines have been clearly outlined by the NRM Electoral Commission. Youth must be aged between 18 and 30 years, Older Persons must be 60 years and above, and voters with disabilities must meet the legal definition of disability. All participants must also appear in the official NRM voters’ register.
NRM officials have urged all qualified voters in these categories to actively take part in the exercise, which forms part of the broader internal electoral roadmap ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The village-level elections are being viewed as a key pillar in the party’s drive to deepen grassroots structures and promote inclusive representation in its leadership architecture.
The party maintains that the SIG elections reaffirm its commitment to democratic participation across all segments of society.
