Three Buyende girls abandoned by mentally ill mother rescued after DailyExpress story

Buyende, Uganda: A child-headed household of three girls abandoned by their mentally ill mother in Buyende Trading Centre has been rescued by One by One, a Jinja-based NGO, following a story published by DailyExpress on May 22, 2025.

The children, led by 12-year-old Nangobi Mariam, had been surviving on mangoes and living in a dilapidated shelter after their parents disappeared.

The NGO, moved by their plight, responded on Monday, June 02, with urgent humanitarian relief and relocated them to a safe home where they will also receive education. The trio received mattresses, posho, bread, rice, cooking oil, soap, and a commitment for full school sponsorship.

“I thank everyone who has contributed to our well-being, and I ask for more help to renovate our house,” said Nangobi during the handover.

Buyende District Probation Officer Rachael Mirembe, who formally handed over the girls to One by One officials, assured the public that the children were being placed in safe custody. “These children are going to be safe and will access education. Family members are free to visit them anytime,” she said.

Some of the items donated to the rescued girls from One by One NGO at their centre in Jinja City.

The trio’s mother, Annastanzia Nairuba, briefly appeared during the handover, admitting she struggles with mental illness, which she attributed to ancestral disturbances.

“I have mental illness caused by cultural ancestors, but I’ve always worried about my children. I thank those who have supported them,” she said.

The girls reunited briefly with their mother

Local leaders and residents, led by zone chairman Steven Mawerere, applauded the rescue effort and urged continued support for the children’s welfare and reproductive health.

“These girls are still young and vulnerable. We thank One by One and everyone who came to their aid,” Mr Mawerere said.
