The People’s Front for Freedom (PPF) emerged from a factional fallout within the FDC, over allegations of financial impropriety at Najjanankumbi, which were strongly denied by President Patrick Amuriat and SG Nandala Mafabi.

Kampala, Uganda: The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), a political vehicle linked to opposition leader Col (Rtd) Dr. Kizza Besigye, has received official registration from the Electoral Commission, granting it legal standing to participate in Uganda’s electoral processes.

The certificate, handed over on Wednesday by EC’s Head of Political Parties, Mr. Samuel Kiyinji, signals a significant breakthrough for the Katonga-based formation that broke away from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in the wake of internal leadership disputes.

Speaking after receiving the document, interim party president and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago described the registration as long overdue.

“This certificate marks an important achievement. Katonga has existed and will continue to exist. We already had our agenda—we were not waiting for this paper to begin our mission,” he said.
“This is a value addition, not the trigger. We already have an action-packed programme we are now rolling out.”

Mr Lukwago also downplayed fears of opposition fragmentation, insisting the PFF was focused on unifying change-seeking forces.

“We’re not here to fight fellow agents of change. Our agenda is to work together, to strengthen the bond among opposition forces. If you’re not with the NRM, this milestone is worth celebrating—it adds to the foundation we’ve long championed,” he added.

Mr Kennedy Okello, the PFF promoter and interim secretary for the presidency, recounted the hurdles faced during registration.

“We started this process almost eight months ago. It’s been tough—members were arrested while collecting signatures, we faced rejections under questionable grounds—but we remained determined,” he said.
“We’ve been active even without the certificate. This only gives us more momentum to expand and solidify our support.”

PFF-leaning legislator Francis Mwijukye, also present at the function, reiterated the party’s commitment to coalition politics and invited undecided Ugandans to join the new formation.

“The path is now clear—PFF is legal, recognised, and ready to serve.”

While officially handing over the certificate, EC’s Mr. Kiyinji advised the party to operate within the confines of the law and national regulations governing political organisations.
