Iganga, Uganda: A section of National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders and delegates from the Busoga sub-region Tuesday endorsed Speaker Anita Among for the position of National Vice Chairperson (Female) on the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), setting the stage for a political face-off with First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga.

During strategic mobilization meetings held June 10, 2025, in Bugiri and later in Iganga, Busoga NRM delegates pledged unwavering support for Hon Among’s bid, arguing she represents a generational shift and has demonstrated exceptional loyalty and leadership within the party structures.

Among is seeking to unseat Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the Kamuli Woman MP and longtime holder of the CEC slot, who has also expressed interest in retaining her position.

The meetings, attended by the NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, Capt. George Mike Mukula, and several MPs including Solomon Silwanyi (Bukooli Central), Sanon Bwire (Bulamogi County), Stephen Baka Mugabi (Bukhooli North), Milton Muwuma (Kigulu South), and Sauda Alibaawo (Iganga Woman MP), unfolded in a charged but determined atmosphere.

Addressing delegates at Royal Springs Hotel in Iganga, Speaker Among acknowledged the growing intimidation her supporters are facing but urged them to stay courageous and anchored in faith. “I came to Busoga to stay, and when there is anything in Busoga and I am in a position to get it, I will get it. I thank you for loving me even amidst threats and intimidation. But the good Lord says, ‘Be strong and courageous, for the Lord will always be with you,’” she said, quoting from Joshua 1:9.

The Speaker praised the MPs who have stood by her, noting their consistent parliamentary support as part of what has shaped her effectiveness as Speaker.

Capt. Mike Mukula described Rt Hon Among as a “steadfast and humble leader,” urging delegates to vote not based on sectarian influence but competence and loyalty to NRM’s four ideological pillars: Patriotism, Pan-Africanism, Socioeconomic Transformation, and Democracy.

“NRM is not about tribe, religion, or wealth. It is about the capacity to serve. Today, we’re here exercising democracy, the fourth pillar of NRM, and that’s a fundamental right, not just a ritual,” Mukula emphasized.

Iganga District NRM Chairperson Hajj Abubakar Walubi, a key organizer of the event, revealed that delegates have faced pressure not to support Among, but they remain determined.

“Some people called us to stop this meeting. But finally, they failed. No amount of intimidation will stop us, Rt. Hon Anita Annet Among will be elected to the CEC,” Walubi asserted.

MP Muwuma used the occasion to thank Among for her role in securing funding for the revival of Busoga University. In response, the Speaker affirmed her instrumental role in the ongoing process to transition the institution into a public university.
