Kampala, Uganda: Members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), on Friday, June 13, staged a protest outside the German Embassy in Kololo, Kampala, denouncing what they called “subversive and undiplomatic” actions by Ambassador Mathias Schauer.
The demonstrators, led by PLU Director of Mobilization Hon. Michael Mawanda, carried placards bearing messages such as “German Ambassador, stop meddling in our local politics,” and “Uganda is an independent country.”
The group accused Schauer of interfering in Uganda’s internal affairs and breaching diplomatic norms.
The protest adds more salt to the growing tensions between Kampala and Berlin after Ugandan intelligence flagged Ambassador Schauer’s alleged activities as a violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention, which outlines the framework for diplomatic relations and conduct.
The protestors rallied behind recent remarks by the Chief of Defence Forces and PLU Chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who openly criticized Schauer.
“I am having issues with the German Ambassador, that has to do with him as a person,” Gen. Muhoozi wrote recently on X. “He is wholly unqualified to be in Uganda. It has nothing to do with the great German people, whom I admire a lot.”

In April, Uganda formally suspended all defence and military cooperation with Germany, citing the ambassador’s alleged involvement with “pseudo-political-military forces” operating in the country.
“The suspension will remain in force until the full resolution of the matter of the Ambassador’s involvement with forces working against the Ugandan government,” said Col. Chris Magezi, the UPDF Acting Spokesman at the time.

The PLU protest comes as the German-Ugandan diplomatic row deepens, with no formal comment yet issued by the German Embassy in Kampala.
