Kampala, Uganda: The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) youth leader, Dr Shamim Nambassa, has told the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) that Uganda is ripe for a comprehensive political overhaul that goes beyond President Museveni.

Speaking through a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), the former Makerere University Guild President said the country’s political future must involve a generational shift in leadership, arguing that many leaders, not just the President, have overstayed and should give way for fresh energy and new ideas.

“We need a complete change of regime beyond Museveni. While we acknowledge the progress made so far, it’s time for us to step in and improve service delivery,” Nambassa said.

She added that while the government deserves credit for certain achievements, it must also appreciate that the country is changing, and the youth are prepared to lead. “Young leaders are ready to take on everything,” she noted.

Nambassa also decried the increased state suppression of youth political activism, saying efforts by the NUP to offer civic education are constantly obstructed by security forces.

“As the @NUP_Ug party, we have made efforts to play our role in providing civic education, a responsibility that primarily lies with the Electoral Commission. We’ve done our best, but our efforts are often undermined and suffocated by the state and security operatives,” she wrote.

The former Makerere Guild President further expressed concern that young leaders no longer feel safe engaging with their peers, particularly on matters of governance and democratic rights.

Her comments add to growing voices within the opposition calling for peaceful transition and broader generational leadership reforms ahead of the 2026 general elections.
