Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni has urged journalists to boldly hold elected leaders accountable, warning that many local politicians are sleeping on their responsibilities and failing to engage the government on critical service delivery issues.
The President made the remarks on Sunday, June 22, during an interaction with media practitioners from Mukono, Kayunga, Buikwe, and Buvuma districts at State House Nakasero ahead of a public rally in Buikwe District to conclude his Greater Mukono wealth creation tour.
Museveni emphasized that journalists must stop treating politics as entertainment and instead focus on amplifying the performance gaps of public officials, especially on key issues such as health infrastructure, roads, and service accessibility under government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“Constituents must demand more from those they elect,” the President said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Many leaders are not following up on public hospitals, roads, and development programs. You, the journalists, have to expose this irresponsibility.”
Mr Museveni, who is seeking a seventh term in office as President in 2026, further cautioned Ugandans against voting for incompetent or absent leaders, saying such choices have long-term consequences on poverty eradication and community transformation.
The President’s engagement with the media came ahead of a rally in Buikwe town, which marked the final stop in his PDM assessment tour of Greater Mukono.
Throughout the week-long campaign, Museveni has addressed multiple rallies, launched the Mengo zonal industrial hub, and listened to testimonies from youth, farmers, and skilling hub beneficiaries on the impact of government wealth creation programs extended to them.
