Cairo, Egypt: AfroMedia, a Pan-African initiative championing African media and journalism, has extended warm congratulations to Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris following his appointment as Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations and Head of the African Mission in New York.
Anthropological researcher and AfroMedia founder Hassan Ghazaly described the appointment as a vote of confidence in Egypt’s diplomatic leadership and its longstanding credibility across the continent and the international arena.
“This selection reflects the depth of trust Egyptian diplomacy enjoys, its respected standing, and vast experience in driving Africa’s priority agendas,” Ghazaly said in a statement shared with DailyExpress.
He noted that the appointment crowns Ambassador Idris’s distinguished career in multilateral diplomacy, with significant contributions in peace, security, and development.
Ghazaly highlighted Egypt’s historic role in advancing African causes globally, recalling that during the national liberation era, Cairo facilitated the journeys of African revolutionary leaders to New York to present their peoples’ aspirations for self-determination. Many of these figures later became icons of independence movements in the Global South.
“Strengthening African competencies within regional and international organisations is critical,” Ghazaly added. “This milestone will deepen African Union and UN cooperation towards more impactful outcomes.”
The announcement also coincides with the UN’s 80th anniversary, which Ghazaly described as a timely reminder of Egypt’s status as a founding member and a consistent contributor to shaping the UN’s direction.
Ambassador Idris previously served as Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Representative to the African Union. In 2024, he was appointed by the UN Secretary-General to the Independent High-Level Advisory Board of the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
Ghazaly underscored that Cairo’s leadership and active role in peacebuilding and regional partnerships remain pillars of Africa’s diplomatic progress.
AfroMedia, established in February 2021 under the Global Solidarity Network, operates under the slogan “The Voice of Egypt… The Voice of Africa.” The initiative has become a prominent platform for strengthening journalistic ties, building media capacity, and promoting balanced storytelling about Africa.
“Our mission is to create a media bridge connecting African communities and Egyptians alike, coordinate mutual messaging, and equip journalists with skills to cover African stories accurately,” Ghazaly said.
