Museveni to Banyarwanda: You Cannot Hold Dual Citizenship

President Museveni meeting leaders of the Ugandan Banyarwanda community at State House Entebbe on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Entebbe, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting the rights and identity of Ugandans of Banyarwanda heritage, urging fair treatment and an end to harassment of those who have lived in the country for decades.

The President revealed during a meeting with a delegation from the Ugandan Banyarwanda community at State House Entebbe, where he emphasized that legitimate citizens recognised by local leaders deserve respect and security under the law.

“I assured them of my commitment to protecting their rights and identity as Ugandans. Those who have lived here for decades and are recognised by local leaders should not be harassed,” Museveni posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

However, the President made it clear that dual citizenship would not be tolerated.

“What we cannot accept is dual citizenship. One must make a choice; you cannot be both. Even I, as a Muhooro, recognise this. If I wish to be Rwandan, I would go to Rwanda, but I cannot claim both identities,” he said.

To resolve any disputes and prevent abuse, Museveni said plans are underway to establish a special committee to verify claims and ensure fairness and truth prevail in all processes affecting the community.

The meeting comes amid ongoing debates about citizenship, land rights, and belonging among Ugandans of Banyarwanda descent, especially in western Uganda districts.
