Kikuube, Uganda: The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has handed over more than 1,100 freehold land titles to residents of Kikuube District, signalling a turning point for women’s economic empowerment and land security in the Bunyoro Subregion.
The landmark titles were handed over by Lands Minister Hon Judith Nabakooba at the Belated Women’s Day Celebrations, organised by Woman MP Hon. Natumanya Flora on Saturday, June 28 at Ruguse Primary School in Bugambe Subcounty in Kikuube District.
Representing the Chief Guest, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, Minister Nabakooba, hailed the development, calling it “a historic step towards dignity and equal opportunity for every woman and family.”
“Today, as we commemorate International Women’s Day, I stand in solidarity with all the resilient women of Uganda…By handing over these freehold land titles today, we are reaffirming that women, too, deserve secure land rights, dignity, and a future full of promise,” Nabakooba said.
“Let us continue working together to break barriers and create a more inclusive and equitable Uganda for all. We women play a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of the country,” she added.
The titles, DailyExpress understands, were processed under the Systematic Land Adjudication and Certification (SLAAC) programme, which has demarcated more than 26,000 parcels in Kikuube District alone.
The Woman MP, Hon. Natumanya Flora, who mobilised the community for the milestone, said the day was the culmination of months of collaboration to ensure that rural women finally claim the security they have waited generations for.
“This is the start of a new chapter where no woman will be evicted or cheated out of her land,” Natumanya declared, drawing loud applause.

Nabakooba advised title holders to resist the temptation to sell and instead leverage their land for credit to transform their families. “Do not sell your land but put the certificates to productive use through accessing credit by using them as collateral security, in order to transform your families and the nation at large,” she cautioned.
She also announced the approval of 101 land titles for the Church of Uganda in Kikuube and encouraged other religious institutions to formalise their land to avoid disputes.
Highlighting reforms under her Ministry, the Minister noted that the Uganda National Land Information System (UGNLIS) now allows residents to verify property ownership online without traveling to Kampala. “We have digitised the registry and decentralised services to Masindi. Use these tools to protect your land,” she said.
Nabakooba further rallied residents to embrace the Parish Development Model to transition from subsistence to commercial farming. “This is how we will break the cycle of poverty and build a more prosperous Bunyoro,” she said.
The Minister also expressed gratitude to H.E. the President “for his visionary leadership in helping Kikuube and Bunyoro at large to register their land in order to use it productively to generate wealth and income.”
The event closed with powerful chants in support of the NRM and President Museveni, as the Minister reminded voters of the progress achieved under the current government. “In 2026, do not forget the leaders who have stood with you,” she said.
