Gulu, Uganda: The second edition of the Gulu City Marathon will be the second International Ugandan Marathon after the Kasese Marathon, organizers have announced.
The grand announcement was made during a media address on the forthcoming second edition of the Gulu City Marathon at Hotel City Inn in Senior Quarters, Laroo-Pece Division on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Francis Gimara(Counsel), the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the forthcoming marathon, told the media that the Second edition of the Gulu City Marathon is slated for December 6, 2025, in Gulu City under the theme “Running for Heritage and Culture”.
Gimara revealed that the marathon is an international one because it is being certified by the World Athletics Committee, as underground works of route marking have already taken place, ready for certification.
According to Gimara, this year’s marathon is targeting 1,000 participants from across the globe, which is purposeful in fulfilling the theme of the run through the promotion of tourism and local cultural experiences.
He, however, added that apart from the promotion of culture and tourism, the run is also for the purposes of promoting general health and well-being for the people in Gulu City and its urban suburbs.
Garvin Wright, one of the only three World Athletic Grid A Route Measurers from South Africa, said over the last two days, he has been involved in measuring and marking routes in Gulu city for the 10 and 21 kilometers, respectively.
“I ride on a bicycle to do the marking of the route and the points where the athletes are going to pass through, which includes traffic control,” he remarked.
According to him, he has had a wonderful experience in that the Gul terrain is flat in both the urban and semi-urban city centres-which offer a friendly running experience compared to the Kasese terrain that is hilly and mountainous.
Alfred Okwonga, the Gulu City Mayor, welcomed the marathon, saying it is one of the ways of engaging the community in Gulu as well as enabling regional and international interaction, which translates into development through developing business.
Okwanga, however, argued that the locals should embrace the marathon and participate fully for their own physical health and wellbeing in addition to social integration.
