Kaliro, Uganda: A women’s group in Buyinda Subcounty in Kaliro District has transformed a single sewing machine into a thriving tailoring enterprise that is changing lives across the Busoga region.

The Buddy Women’s Group, led by Chairperson Nambogwe Rose, is celebrating remarkable progress just six months after receiving empowerment support under President Museveni’s wealth creation campaign.

On Wednesday, June 25, Mr. Wabwire Andrew, the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) Coordinator for Kaliro District, visited the group to assess the impact of the initiative championed by Senior Presidential Advisor and National Coordinator Bazzukulu, Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo.

“Before that day, we had the passion but no means,” Nambogwe said. “When Hajjat Namyalo gave us a tailoring machine, it was like gold to us. It became our hope.”

The group began with the lone machine donated by Hajjat Namyalo on January 11, 2025, during an empowerment drive in Gadumire. Through determination and teamwork, the women gradually saved enough to buy several more machines, expanding their income and skills training activities.

According to Nambogwe, the project has helped members improve household welfare, pay school fees, and regain confidence in their future.

“We are so thankful to President Museveni and Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo,” she said. “We used to hear about empowerment in other districts, now it is real here in Kaliro. And we thank Hon. Namukuta Brenda for remembering the women and bringing this opportunity home.”

Mr. Wabwire applauded the women for demonstrating how a single opportunity can transform an entire community when embraced with commitment and discipline.

The Buddy Women’s Group says it wants to formally register as an organization to expand its operations, train more young mothers, and become a beacon of economic empowerment in Buyinda.
