Mubaje declares war to reclaim Muslim assets after court victory

Grand Mufti Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje addressing the Muslim faithful during a recent event in Kampala.

Kampala, Uganda: The Grand Mufti of Uganda, Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has vowed to reclaim assets he says have been misused by individuals promoting division and hatred within the Muslim community.

In a statement released Wednesday evening, Mufti Mubaje said that despite sustained misinformation campaigns against the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) leadership, the institution remains committed to serving the faithful with integrity and accountability.

“Recently, some individuals have been spreading misinformation and negativity about UMSC and its leadership,” Mubaje noted. “Despite this, UMSC remains focused on its work, upholding values of knowledge, integrity, truth, and striving for Allah’s approval rather than human validation.”

Mubaje announced that following a decisive court ruling recognizing the UMSC as an independent institution capable of resolving internal affairs, the Council would intensify efforts to reclaim properties meant to benefit the community.

He specifically cited Voice of Africa Radio and Kibuli TCC among the assets allegedly misappropriated.

“Unfortunately, some of our assets, including Voice of Africa, have been misused by individuals promoting hatred and violence,” he said. “We have documentation proving ownership, and we will take legal action to recover these assets and ensure they are used for their intended purpose.”

The Grand Mufti also thanked President Museveni for his support, crediting it for helping strengthen UMSC at both national and international levels, and warned that future litigants would be required to bear the costs of unsuccessful court cases.

“Last year, a group of individuals took me and my colleagues to court, questioning my legitimacy as Mufti. The court’s decision to recognize UMSC’s autonomy is a significant step forward,” he said. “Therefore, I have instructed our lawyers to request that costs be awarded to the winning party in any future cases, as we must be responsible with our institutional resources.”

Mubaje has since called on all Muslims to prioritize faith-based solutions derived from the Quran and Hadith before turning to courts or external interventions.
