Kampala, Uganda: Late Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya had completely distanced himself from the National Unity Platform (NUP) at the time of his death, according to his former personal assistant, Alex Lusswa Luwemba.
Speaking in a recent interview that has reignited debate over Ssegirinya’s final months, Lusswa alleged that the MP, popularly known as Mr Update, had resolved not to renew his NUP membership and no longer wanted anything to do with the party led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine.
“Mr Update wouldn’t have received the NUP card if he were alive; he had left the party, and there were many other factors,” Lusswa claimed.
The Late MP’s former P.A. did not elaborate on the specific factors behind Ssegirinya’s fallout with NUP, but he hinted at strained relations and internal mistrust.
Ssegirinya, who died earlier this year after months of illness and medical treatment abroad, was arrested in 2021 on murder charges linked to a spate of killings in Greater Masaka, a case that sparked controversy and claims that he had become a target due to his political prominence.
Throughout his detention and subsequent illness, Ssegirinya repeatedly lamented the lack of adequate support from his party. Yet, despite reported tensions, NUP leaders were visibly present during his funeral rites and paid tribute to him as a dedicated comrade.
The revelations by Lusswa have generated fresh discussion over divisions within the opposition and the challenges NUP has faced managing high-profile cases involving its MPs.
At the time of publication, NUP officials had not issued an official response to the claims.
