Kampala, Uganda: Eva Mbabazi, the woman arrested over the mysterious death of renowned city gynaecologist Dr. Spire Kiggundu, has told investigators the final moments she shared with him before he collapsed in a lodge room in Kajjansi.
Mbabazi, who had been the subject of an intensive manhunt, was apprehended on Monday, June 30, in Seeta, Mukono District, after police retrieved CCTV footage identifying her as the last person seen with the deceased at the lodge on June 22.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, confirmed the arrest of Mbabazi, but this publication understands she’s now out on police bond after recording her statement with police authorities.
Although police did not disclose her statement, a detective familiar with the inquiry said the woman admitted she was with Dr. Kiggundu until he began experiencing breathing difficulties.
According to the police source, the woman told investigators she first met Dr. Kiggundu in 2018 when she accompanied her sister for a maternity visit at Henrob Hospital, where the deceased was a consultant gynaecologist. They remained in contact intermittently over the years.
On the day of his death, she said the two agreed to meet in Kajjansi at around 5:00 pm. She reportedly found him already checked into a guest house room. Inside, she noticed two bottles of water, a half-empty juice bottle, and HIV testing kits.
She narrated that the two spent about 30 minutes together before Dr. Kiggundu suddenly developed breathing problems. Despite her attempts to ask what was wrong, he did not respond, and his shallow breathing persisted.
Believing he might have been experiencing an epileptic episode, she said she waited to see if he would recover. When he did not improve, she panicked and left the room.
As she exited, she remembered she had left behind a bottle of perfume the doctor had gifted her. Upon returning to the room, she said she found him lying calmly on the bed. She left again but tried calling his phone later, hoping he had regained consciousness. Her calls went unanswered. She said she only learned from media reports that Dr. Kiggundu had been found dead in the same guest house.
The body was discovered by lodge attendants who alerted police.
CCTV footage obtained by detectives showed Dr. Kiggundu entering the premises around 5:20 pm carrying bottles of water and juice. About 25 minutes later, Mbabazi was seen entering the same room, dressed in trousers with white stripes, a blouse, a black jacket, and carrying a cross bag.
Seven minutes after entering, she was recorded exiting the room briefly before returning, then leaving again.
Police investigators traced her using phone call records and WhatsApp data. According to detectives, the two had communicated 17 times by phone between May and June 2025, supplementing frequent WhatsApp exchanges.
Relatives of the deceased said a post-mortem examination indicated Dr. Kiggundu died of heart-related complications. However, police said investigations are ongoing to determine whether the circumstances amount to homicide or natural death.
Born in September 1977, Dr. Spire Kiggundu was the proprietor of Henrob Hospital, a respected consultant gynaecologist, and president of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Uganda (ALSU). His death has drawn widespread shock from the medical fraternity.
